GLOSSARY OF IMPORTANT TERMS
- Bill of Lading (BOL) – The itemized list of goods in a shipment.
- Broker – A company that arranges the transportation of cargo for others.
- Deadhead – Driving a trailer without cargo.
- Drop Pay – Extra pay for a delivery or extra stop.
- P&D – Pickup and delivery.
- Payload – The entire weight of the cargo.
- Peddle Run – A run with frequent stops.
- Dry Run – If the arrangements are not made by the customer for the pick up of the vehicle and the driver has to return empty from the pick up location, then the customer is entitled to pay the Dry Run fee.
- ATA/ Actual Time of Arrival – The time when the vehicle actually arrives at the destination.
- ATD/ Actual Time of Departure – The time when the vehicle was actually picked up and departed from the place of origin.
- Door-to-Door Auto Shipping – As the term implies, this means picking up a car from the car owner’s home (or whatever location the car owner specifies) and dropping it off to the receiver’s specific end destination.
- Tracking – Tracking means following the progress of a car shipment through its delivery process.
- Transit Time – The total time that passed between the vehicle’s departure from the origin to the vehicle’s arrival at the destination.
- VIN Number – The vehicle identification number is a unique registered code used to identify an individual motor vehicle.
- D.O.T. Number – License administered to for-hire carriers by the Department of Transportation. (Not the same as Motor Carrier #).
- Motor Carrier Number (MC#) – License administered to for-hire carriers by the Federal Motor Carrier Administration (FMCSA). Commonly referred to as USDOT numbers.
